NavDP4000 control system onboard Sophie Germain

23 August, 2023
Navis Engineering OY, a globally recognised leader in advanced vessels’ motion control systems, is proud to announce the successful sea trials of its innovative NavDP4000 dynamic positioning (DP) control system onboard Orange Marine’s new cable laying and repair vessel. This significant milestone marks a leap forward in the field of sustainable energy solutions and maritime technology, reinforcing Navis Engineering’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of innovation and efficiency.

Background and Importance

The vessel – named C/S Sophie Germain, designed by VARD Norway and built by Colombo Dockyards PLC in Sri Lanka – will operate in the Mediterranean, Red, and Black Seas.
The NavDP4000 redundant DP-2 control system had been supplied with the BV DYNAPOS AM/AT R certification to ensure safe and precise operations. The scope of the equipment includes a full set of sensors and position reference systems required by the class rules and accuracy-demanding cable laying and repair operations, such as two high-accuracy DGPS systems, ultrasonic anemometers with heated transducers, high-precision motion reference units, and a hydroacoustic USBL system with deployment machinery and different types of transducers.

Customer Choice and Value

Orange Marine chose Navis Engineering OY for its expertise and track record in delivering state-of-the-art DP control systems. This is the second cable laying and repair vessel in the Orange Marine fleet equipped with the NavDP4000 control system. The first one is Leon Thevenin, which has been in successful operations with the NavDP4000 control system since the end of 2018. The crew of Leon Thevenin were impressed by the accuracy and reliability of NavDP4000 as well as support from Navis Engineering OY’s highly experienced team wherever the vessel was in operation.

Vessel Details

The vessel C/S Sophie Germain, designed by VARD Norway, is 100 metres in length with a beam of 18.8 metres and a depth of 7.15 metres. With a deadweight capacity of 1,800 DWT, the vessel reaches a remarkable speed of 14.5 knots and accommodates 76 personnel. Notably, the vessel is equipped with three cable tanks, including one fitted with a carousel system, enabling the transportation of fibre optic and power cables.

Customer Relationship and Future Prospects

Orange Marine’s decision to select Navis Engineering OY once again for this milestone project is a testament to the strong relationship between the two entities. ‘The customer’s satisfaction with Navis Engineering OY solutions, as evidenced by their endorsement of the DP control system’s behaviour on the Leon Thevenin, lays a solid foundation for future collaborations,’ says Evgeny Kottsov, sales director of Navis Engineering OY.
